When trying to put an AVI. file into Windows Movie Maker this comes up?

"cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again."

This has never happened before, I always use the Divx codec to import .AVI files and it always works, I don't see what the problem is now and yes I have restarted the computer to no avail.

Any ideas?

It's not DivX encoded.
The avi format is not supported by any microsoft media players pretty much, get VLC media player. it plays everything,

and for the microsoft movie maker thing, try converting your video to mpg format, google video convertors
Yup, trying typing in AVI players i guess..

are you getting an error message? Could be a codec problem or the wrong format. Windows movie maker accept avi and wmv formats. You can download and install the full k-lite codec pack at http://www.k-litecodecpack.com.

Why can,t i edit my home video with windows movie maker?

when i try to edit my home video( camcorder) on windows movie maker it says no valid files found, but i can play it on windows media player (i think it,s mpeg files)and when i try to edit it on sonic mydvd it edits ok, but when i go to burn it i get an error file -20400 is not a valid mpeg file. Any ideas what the problem could be...or any free software i could download that would do the job ( including background music...and menus) i,ve wasted loads of dvd,s

Why can,t i edit my home video with windows movie maker?

You need to convert those files first to formats that moviemaker deals with like avi and wmv before burning it to a dvd. There are several software out there that can do conversions, some are even free.

MICROSOFT gives you a guide below:
even though mpeg is a supported format, it doesn't work great with the program so I suggest you convert your video.

Go to www.download.com and do a search for video converters. If you want something free, use the advanced search to narrow down your search and find free softwares only or go to www.freewarefiles.com and do a search there.

Download the video %26amp; Then Download flv player

You have to convert flv videos to some formats that are supported by Windows movie maker http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/03/19...

http://www.riverpast.com/en/support/tuto...
Thats what I would like to know.
For the XP version, the accepted formats are wmv, asf, mpg (mpeg-1), avi (dv-avi), wma, wav, vob and mp3. For the Windows Vista Home Premium and Ultimate editions of Movie Maker support importing MPEG-2 Program streams and DVR-MS formats.

In order for you to download movies from youtube, you would need to copy paste the url of the video to the website http://www.keepvid.com. The video will be downloaded in flv format. Next is you would have to convert the flv file usig the program total video converter.

I hope this helps. :)

I can't view a saved project in Windows Movie Maker?

Yesterday I was making this video combining scenes from a videogame with some music, and then I decide I'd finish it today and so I save it as it was. Now I want to finish it, but when I try to open the MSWMM file, I cannot play nor view the project in the preview screen. It does show me all the scenes and stuff in the Timeline, but when I click the play button nothing happens. What can I do? I've heard I should re-install Windows Movie Maker, but is that really necesary? If so, where can I find the file to re-install it?
