How do I do time splicing and white-outs on Windows Movie Maker?

This happens a lot in movie trailers, especially those of action flicks. The video will play in fast forward, then suddenly crawls in slow motion to highlight a particular action, and sometimes will speed up again.

I believe the effect is called a time splice. How do you achieve this effect using Windows Movie Maker? How do I make a clip play in slow motion or fast forward? Can I specify the speed or is it predetermined?

Also, how do you do those blinding white flashes for scene transitions using WMM? Not the slow 'fade out and fade in from white' transition effect. It's a lot faster, like a camera bulb going off. Again, you see this used in a lot of action movie trailers.

Step one. Stop using WMM.

Step two. Download and instal Avid Free DV Editting System

Step Three. Make good looking films now.
