i recently found windows movie maker on the internet and i understand how to use it i just have no idea how to get videos from youtube or other sites onto WMM so that i can edit them and make my own movies. please help my poor wandering soul.

The only way you can do that is to ask the youtuber if they can give you the downloadable, so that you can use their video to edit. Otherwise, try searching for videos you want online to see if you can find videos that are downloadable

Post the video link into the box, and from there you can choose a video format (avi, mov, etc.) of your choice for the video to be downloaded as.

Now, I am not sure which video formats that WMM can use as I have never used the program myself, but you shouldn't have any issue converting an .avi or something into a usable format.

Keep in mind that Youtube videos are originally in FLV format so the quality is not going to be all the good. Also, Vixy only works for Youtube I believe, so other sites that use flash movies like LiveVideo and others may not work with Vixy.

Your downloaded youtube vidoe is flv video, you just have to get a flv converter to convert flv to wmv,avi. and then edit in windows movie maker to make your own movies. I always use FLV to Video Converter to convert flv video to avi,mpeg, wmv video, http://www.flvsoft.com/flv_to_video/
